North East Citizen Advocacy Code of Conduct
Volunteers and Citizen Advocates
This Code of Conduct outlines the standards of behaviour and obligations agreed to by the Volunteer (Citizen Advocate).
Volunteers agree to:
- Follow NECA’s policies and procedures as well as any instructions or reasonable directions given to them.
- Agree to follow the concepts of Social Role Valorisation.
- Declare any conflict of interest in performing your role.
- Maintain the confidentiality of participants.
- Treat all people with disability with dignity and respect and ensure that they represent people with a disability in a positive way.
- Commitment to keeping children and young people safe and to report any allegation of abuse, to NECA and relevant authority, if there is a reasonable belief that an incident has occurred.
- Maintain a current Working with Children’s check and Police check.
- Not engage in sexual relationships with participants or any vulnerable person connected with the program.
- Recognise that all forms of physical, sexual, emotional and verbal abuse is unacceptable.
- Recognise and respect that participants are entitled to have religious beliefs or sexual or political persuasion different from their own.
- Not take illegal drugs or be alcohol or drug effected when supporting participants.
- Create an environment where the participant is comfortable speaking up and respond to concerns when they are raised.
